The U.S. Department of Justice, alongside 30 state and district attorneys general, has filed a comprehensive antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation Entertainment and its subsidiary, Ticketmaster. The civil suit alleges that the company has maintained an illegal monopoly over the live events industry, leading to higher ticket prices, fewer choices for consumers, and restricted competition for venues and artists. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the action aims to 'restore competition' to a market the government claims is stifled by exclusionary practices. In a public response, Live Nation described the lawsuit as 'baseless,' arguing that ticket prices are driven by artist popularity and production costs rather than market dominance. Legal analysts suggest the case could take years to resolve and may potentially lead to a court-ordered breakup of the entertainment giant, marking a significant shift in federal regulatory strategy toward the live music and ticketing sectors.
